The beginning …. An introduction

Indian Community Welfare Organisation (I.C.W.O) is a registered voluntary organization was established in 1994. It was out of deep and abiding concern for marginalized and exploited women in difficult circumstances in India. The focus was on working with commercial sex workers and their clients and certain other target groups with the ultimate aim of empowering them. ICWO is doing a considerable amount of work in the field of STD / HIV / AIDS prevention with the aid of several dedicated volunteers, the constant encouragement and support of the government. Yet there are several mountains to climb.

Background of the Organisation

Indian Community Welfare Organisation (I.C.W.O) is a Non profitable and Non Governmental Organisation working in the field of HIV /AIDS prevention and community welfare. I.C.W.O is working with Sex workers, their clients and Tourist at Mamallapuram for the past nine years. I.C.W.O also works with Homosexual Men in Chennai and Barbers in Tamil Nadu. We have also successfully completed AIDS awareness program for Auto-rickshaw drivers in Chennai, which was selected as the best practice in the country by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) for the year 1998. I.C.W.O. is technically and financially supported by Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TNSACS), Chennai Corporation AIDS Prevention And Control Society (CAPACS), ACTION AID INDIA, APAC, VHS-USAID, TamilNadu AIDS Initiative (TAI)- Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, MIVA (Netherlands), Indien-Hilifswerk.eV (Germany), SOS PG ASBL (Belgium), GSM (Belgium), UNAIDS ( New Delhi), UNICEF, UNDP, UNAIDS, Cardiff University (USA), Elton John AIDS Foundation (UK), Global Fund for Women (USA), MAMA Cash (Netherlands), AAPM-Switzerland ,Tele-TICINO (Switzerland) GRUPPO, Madras-TICINO (Switzerland), TIDES Foundation (USA), SARI–Q–AED (New Delhi), Asset India Foundation (USA).

The staff team of ICWO consists of 44 Full time staff, 20 Part time staff, 3 consultants, 147 Peer educators and 95 Volunteers

Aims and Objectives of ICWO

  1. To increase the knowledge about STD / HIV / AIDS and prevention to various target groups.
  2. To reduce the prevalence and incidents of STD / HIV / AIDS among the high risk groups
  3. To improve the quality of STD care and treatment to target groups.
  4. To trigger off the male and female sex workers and their clients to practice safe sex.
  5. To motivate the other affiliated groups of the prime target groups as agents for changes.
  6. To ensure distribution and availability of good quality condoms among the target groups.
  7. To create alternative employment for sex workers.
  8. To generate community support for programmes organized by ICWO
  9. To increase the quality of life of sex workers and their children.
  10. To ensure enjoyment of basic rights of sex workers and their childrens.
